April

Spring Trophy        -           Wetherby

Wednesday 23rd April

£55                  14 Miles

Wetherby Golf Club was founded in 1910 on land which, during the 19th Century was the site of Wetherby Racecourse.  The golf course lies south west of the town of Wetherby on the border with the village of Linton nestling in the Wharfe Valley and the River Wharfe itself presents a picturesque backdrop for the eastern boundary of the course. The village of Linton stands high on the limestone escarpment above the course and forms the western boundary. The course itself is bisected by the old Leeds to Wetherby railway line which fell victim to the Beeching axe in the 60s.  Although the trains used to be an additional hazard for members the line now forms a picturesque swathe of trees and undergrowth providing a natural haven for wildlife but still a ready hazard for the wayward golfer.

Wetherby is a medium length parkland course that is renowned for its lush fairways. Whilst all 18 holes have individual character and qualities, particularly memorable holes are the seventh, a par 4 which follows the sweeping bend of the River Wharfe, and the fourteenth (the quarry hole), an intimidating par 3 which has been many an errant golfer's 'Waterloo'. In short, a golf course to test all levels of ability.

 May                                 Slaley Hall

The Hunting Championship Course is venue for the Great North Open and is noted for its spectacular fairways and tree lined avenues. Set against a backdrop of lakes and woodland, this course does not disappoint. Many of the world's leading professionals have played and praised The Hunting.

May

NSPCC Putter        -           Pike Hills

Wednesday 21st May

£40                  20 Miles

An eighteen-hole parkland course, with tree lined fairways, built around Askham Bog, which has been designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). As you make the short walk from the 6th green to the 7th tee you will suddenly find yourself in a little wilderness, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Askham Bog Nature Reserve. It is not uncommon to see deer roaming across the course, and the less desirable rabbits and squirrels are in abundance, but this is Mother Nature at its best.

The course, 6,146 yards, with SSS of 70, and par 71 has a challenging variety of holes, varying lengths of par 4's and challenging par 5's. It has a blend of long and short holes which require good course management and careful shot making decisions have to be made. A couple of ponds come into play, and you are never far away from the beck which runs from Askham Bog.

When the fairways have been negotiated, some of the trickiest greens in the north of England await you; this is when the good putter comes to the fore. Altogether it makes Pike Hills a most enjoyable course and at the same time, a testing game for golfers of all abilities. Some may say, because we are in the “Vale of York” which is predominantly a flat part of Yorkshire it is not too demanding a course, some say this makes it even more enjoyable.

Initially, the Club met and had its lockers in an outhouse at Low Mill Farm, opposite the present Clubhouse.  The Clubhouse which was a First World War Nissen hut was restricted to use by guests of the Sutherland family, owners of the Course.  The members of the Club were only allowed to use the Clubhouse after 1952.

Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country’s finest Championship Golf Courses.  Originally designed by Dr Alistair MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 125 acres of dramatically contrasting mainly level woodland and moorland.

From the opening par 5 there are manu fine holes to enjoy including the new 6th, rated the most difficult, and the famous Gibraltar par 3 10th with its sloping plateau green; the Club’s signature hole.

Typical of all great courses there is a classic finish.  With its fairway favouring strategically placed bunkers, the 18th requires two exceptional shots to find the well-guarded green which nestles under the clubhouse windows.
