Trier is the oldest city in Germany with many Roman remains including an amphitheatre, Forum Baths and Roman gate (Porta Nigra). It has an excellent shopping centre and plenty of restaurants. Museums include the Bishop’s Museum, Roman Archaeological Museum and Toy Museum.  We combine this with visits to Luxembourg and the annual wine festival at Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle.

The 4 star Park Plaza Hotel is a very comfortable hotel situated in the heart of the city.  It offers en-suite rooms with satellite TV, mini bar, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities.  There is a bar, restaurant and health and fitness suite with sauna, steam room and beauty treatments (extra cost).

Saturday

This morning we are joined by a professional guide for a 2-hour panoramic sightseeing tour of Trier’s landmarks. The rest of the day is free until we depart at 4pm for the picturesque town of Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle where the annual Wine Festival is in full swing. There is street entertainment, music and over 30 wine growers to sample plus fireworks this evening!  There are several bars and restaurants. We depart at 10.30pm and arrive back at the hotel around 11.15pm.

Sunday

The morning is free then at noon we depart for Luxembourg City. The city is a medieval fortress with over 100 bridges and viaducts radiating from the centre.  There is beautiful architecture, museums and relaxing cafes. A Tourist Train departs every 30 minutes from Place de la Constitution and there is a guided city walk every day at 2pm. Places of interest include Notre Dame Cathedral, National Museum of Art and History and the Casemates, a labyrinth of defensive underground passageways, the earliest dating from the 17th century (guided tours available). The Grand Ducal Palace can only be viewed from the exterior. In the late afternoon we return to Trier.
