Bordeaux

Bordeaux has just been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognising the beauty and style of its mainly 18th century architectural heritage. There are over 300 historical monuments, a wide variety of museums (including a dedicated wine museum), open squares, excellent shops and some highly rated restaurants. In recent years the city has undergone a transformation with the development of the quays along the Garonne river, the restoration of many facades and the installation of a Rapid Transit System.

Wine

Heading north toward the estuary of the Gironde is the Medoc, home to the most famous chateaux of Bordeaux including Margaux, Lafite, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. To the east, heading up the Dordogne river is the beautiful historic town of St Emilion (also classified as a UNESCO world heritage site) and its vineyards. These are just two of several prestigious wine areas in the region.

St Emilion

This medieval town stands proudly at the top of a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley, and was built in the shape of an amphitheatre, still retaining several sections of exterior walls. It is an enchanting town of ochre-coloured stone, steep and narrow streets and fascinating monuments including an underground monolithic church carved out of solid limestone. There are plenty of wine merchants and opportunities for tastings as you explore.

On Saturday evening a very special event takes place as the whole town celebrates its heritage. La Nuit de Patrimoine involves an enthralling spectacle of parades, music, dance and fireworks – a magical evening which will be a highlight of your visit.
