KIDDIEWALK  20 July 2008

HAREWOOD walk with PINOCCHIO show

For the first time the Rambling Club’s Kiddiewalk (around the perimeter of Harewood grounds) coincides with a show “Pinocchio” being staged by Illyria's Theatre for Children in the beautiful Walled Garden.

Please note that you can choose either event or both but bear in mind that the show is not recommended for children under 5.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE RAMBLING CLUB TO JOIN IN

THE WALK

The walk is for children of all ages from newborn to ninety and is suitable for (sturdy) pushchairs and will commence at 2.00pm.

We will assemble at the junction of Harrogate Road and the road signposted to Wike about half a mile before reaching Harewood from Leeds.

From here we’ll send a car to the end so we won’t have to walk back up the hill!

The walk (Mainly downhill) will take between ninety minutes and 2 hours with fine views as we pass through some of the working estate buildings and we should even see the stags as we pass the deer herds.

You should bring a picnic tea for when we’ve finished the walk. If you’re going on to the show you can have your picnic in the beautiful walled garden (see the details below).

Please contact Tony Armitage if you need a lift.

THE SHOW

PINOCCHIO at HAREWOOD HOUSE

                                                          By Carlo Collodi

Ilyria are proud to present this classic tale, specially adapted for the stage.

Illyria's Theatre for Children concentrates on good storytelling. Brightly costumed and accompanied by live music, the shows address their target audience in an unpatronising, intelligent and entertaining way.

Everyone thinks they know the story of Pinocchio. The truth is they probably don’t. Forget Disney. Illyria’s production is based entirely on Carlo Collodi’s macabre comic masterpiece for smart grown-ups and brave children.

Geppetto the carpenter carves a puppet called Pinocchio from a block of wood, but Pinocchio cunningly throws a wild tantrum and gets Geppetto sent to prison for cruelty. Free to do what he likes, Pinocchio joins the theatre, squanders his father’s money, is chased by murderers and almost hanged. Eventually he ends up in the wonderful Land of Toys where naughty children run riot – but turn into donkeys. All his life Pinocchio has longed to become a real boy, but what sacrifices will he have to make before he turns into an ass instead?

Collodi’s extraordinary story of redemption is also an hysterical satire on growing up – and both children and adults will recognise the reality that lurks behind each of the heavily metaphorical episodes in the play. Featuring a leading actor whose nose really does grow, and a 20-foot shark, Illyria’s PINOCCHIO is suitable for everyone aged 5 and over.

Please Note: the show is not suitable for under 5’s. Children this age may struggle emotionally with the fact that the title role is not just naughty but spiteful and vindictive in placese. Some action scenes are quite intense and they may also be challenged by seeing a version of the story which is very different from the cartoon one they know intimately.
